ABOUT US

DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTING!

The Department of Accounting, formerly known as the Department of Management and Accounting, has a rich history dating back to 1976. It was established when the Institute of Administration became a faculty of the university, evolving from a unit that trained government professionals into a leading academic hub.

The general philosophy of our training in the accounting programme is to provide students with quality education and training that will develop their minds, impart both theoretical and practical knowledge on the individual student, develop self-confidence and help graduates to be innovative and self-reliant in the field of accounting. In the popular business world model of five (5) Ms of management, i.e. men, machines, methods, materials and money, it is no gainsaying that ‘money management’ is central to all others as availability of money will provide others making its management possible. Our programme is a major shift from the Traditional ‘Desk’ to ‘Field’ and ‘Cloud’ Accounting. We have also included contemporary development in progressive technologies affecting accounting generally. More importantly, we
have introduced entrepreneurship in Accounting to equip undergraduates for basic
consultancy engagements on graduation.

Our Postgraduate programmes aims to develop accounting professionals who not only possess a deep understanding of advanced financial principles but also exhibit strong ethical leadership and adaptability in a rapidly evolving global financial environment. The programme emphasizes a rigorous academic framework that integrates contemporary practices with theoretical knowledge, ensuring graduates meet the highest professional standards. Additionally, it fosters a commitment to ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and continuous professional development, preparing students to navigate complex financial landscapes with integrity and expertise. Moreover, the programme promotes a global perspective and cultural competence, essential for operating in today’s interconnected world. By integrating practical experiences such as internships, case studies, and real-world projects, the program bridges the gap between theory and practice, equipping students with the hands-on skills needed for immediate application in the workplace. Emphasizing community engagement and social responsibility, the program encourages graduates to contribute positively to their communities and the broader society through ethical accounting practices and initiatives that promote financial literacy and economic development. This holistic approach aims to produce well-rounded, ethically grounded accounting leaders capable of driving innovation and advancing the global financial system.
